In the morning we will depart to Oberhausen and discover the industrial monument called Gasometer. It was built in late 1920’s as Europe’s biggest disc-type gas holder. And nowadays it is an impressive reminder of the heavy industry character of the Ruhr area. The town belongs to the Frankfurt Rhine Main Region and is Germany’s biggest tourist attraction. Only Cologne Cathedral draws more tourists from other countries. Making the town worth seeing is, not only the excellent wine – the Rüdesheimer Berg is among Germany’s best winegrowing areas – or even the Old Town itself, but also the picturesque Rheingau landscape together with the Romantic Rhine.

For our sportier Whine lovers we offer an alternative day that contains a hike on the Rhine trail and wine tasting in the area as well as a visit of Dragon’ Rock and an experience on the oldest cog railway in Germany. The Dragons Rock ruin can be seen in the Seven Hills across the river from your hotel. You can make your decision after your arrival in Germany and getting familiar with the terrain, the trail does contain some challenging inclines, uphill and downhill narrow paths through vineyards with spectacular views. You can find closer description of this option in our Germany Daily Tours, its called Rhine and Wine.

Burg Eltz is a medieval castle nestled in the hills above the Moselle River between Koblenz and Trier, Germany. It is still owned by a branch of the same family that lived there in the 12th century, 33 generations ago. The Government Bunker (Regierungsbunker) in Germany, officially named Ausweichsitz der Verfassungsorgane des Bundes im Krisen- und Verteidigungsfall zur Wahrung von deren Funktionstüchtigkeit [AdVB] (Emergency Seat of the Federal Constitutional Organs in the event of Crisis or Defence Situations to maintain their Ability to Function) was a massive underground complex designed to house the German government, parliament and all federal personnel needed to keep the government working in the event of war or severe crisis. Located only about 25 km south of Bonn, Germany (the capital and government seat of pre-unification West Germany), in the Ahr Valley between the towns of Ahrweiler and Dernau, it was one of the best kept secrets of West Germany. It was built between 1960 and 1972 inside two abandoned railway tunnels, maintained and kept in a working condition for about 30 years and decommissioned in 1997. A small part of the once-secret site is now open to the public as Government Bunker Documentation Site, while the vast majority is abandoned and sealed.

  • Pottery

Next we will visit a traditional German pottery and get some background info and first hand tips from the owner himself. This is also the chance to purchase some unique German Biersteins that will make for nice decoration or a great glass for a cold one.

Now we head back to the hotel for lunch. After that we will start the afternoon program.

  • Friedensmuseum Brücke Remagen(WW-II)

The Ludendorff Bridge (in World War II, frequently called the Bridge at Remagen) was a railway bridge across the Rhine in Germany, connecting the villages of Remagen and Erpel between the two ridge hills flanking the river.
